A clear demonstration of this is the Heavy Duty, Single Tool, Tangential Head that was originally developed for cutting polycarbonate roofing sheet up to 25 mm (1 inch) thick. This tool has been further developed and tested with newer multi-layer polycarbonate sheeting that is now being manufactured up to 2 inches thick. This tool head revolutionized the cutting of polycarbonate as the fixed blade generates almost no swarf and no dust. Unlike other methods that use either grinding wheels or reciprocating blades that generate considerable debris that must be cleaned from the sheets before installation.

The drive gear to the main cutting beam, and the framework that supports the beam are engineered with ample strength to cope with the torsion forces generated by such a formidable task. The picture to the right clearly shows the gearing system that allows the blade to be rotated to an optimal cutting position with respect to the movement of the cutting head, and the line of the cut. Very precise and intricate two-dimensional shapes can be cut in a wide variety of materials, without the added cost and complexity of upgrading to a laser system.

The tangential cutting head shown in the pictures above is fitted with both a fixed drag blade and a pizza wheel (rotary) knife. Both tools use economical and easy-to-obtain blades that can be sourced from almost everywhere.

The blade cutting depth can be set to cut the plastic, but not the paper backing. This makes it simple to peel the backing paper off as it comes off in one single intact sheet.
